Top Places to Enjoy Fireworks this 4th of July! (Plus 3 easy tips to prevent neck pain while watching them)

It’s that time of the year again, everyone is making big plans for the long 4th of July weekend. Whether your festivities for the holiday include going to a family barbecue, spending a day on the beach, hanging out by the pool, or even attending a festive parade, the celebration is bound to include a spectacular fireworks display to finish off the star spangled celebration. So, set up some picnic blankets and lawn chairs, gather around with your family/friends and look up to the night sky to enjoy the incredible fireworks display. When you are enjoying these wonderful displays of exploding colors and lights, don’t let neck pain get in your way of getting the best view! When you are looking up for a long period of time enjoying the show, it is not uncommon to have neck discomfort.

Follow these 3 simple tips to allow you to enjoy the show:

1. Take Breaks
When you are looking up enjoying the display, make sure you are taking several breaks throughout the show to move your neck into various positions. After about 10-15 minutes, take a break to either let your neck relax into a neutral position or perform some repeated motions with fluid head turns horizontally from left to right or head turns vertically up and down.

2. Stretch
If you find yourself experiencing a little neck discomfort while watching the show, take a few minutes to perform some stretches. Three good stretches to perform include the following: bringing your chin to your chest allowing yourself to feel a stretch along the back of your neck, bringing your right ear towards your right shoulder allowing for a stretch of the left side of your neck, and taking your left ear to your left shoulder feeling a stretch on the right side of your neck. Hold these stretches for around 10 seconds and repeat 2-3 times each.

3. Change positions
If you are finding yourself getting some neck stiffness during your holiday festivities, take a moment to change your body position. For example, if you are seated in a lawn chair looking up, try standing for the next few minutes to allow your neck to have a small break. Also if you are standing or seated, try laying down on a picnic blanket allowing your neck to completely relax!
