As winter is now upon us, you may be concerned about reaching your physical therapy and fitness goals. However, colder weather and shorter days doesn’t mean you have to put a stop to your routine, you just have to adjust! While it may feel enticing to ditch the routine, grab that cup of hot cocoa with extra marshmallows, and watch your favorite comfort movie (all of which you can still happily do), your spring and summer self with thank you for keeping that mobility and strength in the winter months.
This time of year is not only a great opportunity to switch things up, but it is also a great time to test your motivation to improve your function and quality of life. Whether you’re new to working out, an athlete, or want a change in activity type, these following tips can help you get started. Keep these words of wisdom in mind when planning your winter workouts!
Proper Warm-Up
Warming up before a workout is ALWAYS important, but particularly so in colder weather. Our bodies need more time to get warm and prepare for activity. Jumping right into your activity without a proper warm up can lead to injury and poor performance. Please warm up (your muscles and joints will thank you later).
Wear Layers
Determined to complete that outdoor run? Need to feel the breeze of fresh air? Dressing in layers will keep that heat close to your body. Avoid getting sick by wearing layers and protecting your hands and feet with warm socks and gloves.
Indoor Workouts
Can’t fathom going outside below 40 degrees? Find an indoor workout that best suits your goals. There are a plethora of options and information available to complete an effective indoor workout. Change up your routine by trying a group fitness class near you, or search for circuits from online trainers. Group fitness classes or finding a group to do your workouts with are a great way to try something new and get involved in a community of like-minded people who can help motivate you! Don’t be afraid to adapt and be flexible with your routine.
